Bypass Valves Explained: Function, Uses & Selection
A bypass valve is a small component that can save a hydraulic system from serious, expensive damage. If you're specifying, replacing, or troubleshooting one in a system anywhere from Brisbane to Emerald, here's what a bypass valve actually does and why getting the right one matters.
What Is a Bypass Valve?
A bypass valve redirects fluid flow around a component — commonly a filter, cooler, or restrictive part of the circuit — when pressure across that component exceeds a set limit. Instead of forcing fluid through a blocked or cold filter and risking damage to seals, pumps, or the filter media itself, the bypass valve opens and lets flow continue through an alternative path.
Where Bypass Valves Are Used
- Filtration systems — protecting the pump from starvation if a filter becomes clogged
- Oil coolers — allowing flow to bypass the cooler during cold starts, before the fluid has warmed to operating viscosity
- Pressure relief circuits — managing excess flow or pressure in a hydraulic loop
- Engine and lubrication systems — protecting components when oil is too thick to pass through normal channels
Why Bypass Valves Matter for Equipment Longevity
Without a functioning bypass valve, a blocked filter or cold, viscous fluid can cause cavitation, pump damage, or a burst filter housing. The cost of a bypass valve is minor compared to the cost of replacing a hydraulic pump or repairing a system that's ingested unfiltered fluid because a blocked filter had nowhere else for the flow to go.
Choosing the Right Bypass Valve
Selection depends on the cracking pressure required, flow rate through the system, and where in the circuit it needs to sit. Using a bypass valve rated too low will cause it to open under normal operating pressure; too high, and it won't protect the system when it needs to.
Sourcing Bypass Valves in Queensland
Jonlin Hydraulics & Engineering carries a broad range of CETOP valves, subplates and manifolds suited to bypass and pressure-control applications, and our engineering team can help design or troubleshoot circuits where the wrong bypass setting is causing premature component wear. We support customers across Brisbane, Gladstone, Emerald, the Sunshine Coast, Coopers Plains, Richlands, and Ipswich with both stock components and custom engineering advice.
